VGCC comes away with win at JCC

Vance-Granville Community College’s men’s basketball team racked up its third victory in a row by defeating Johnston Community College on the road, 109-89, on Feb. 18. The VGCC Vanguards (10-4) and the JCC team kept it close in the first half, with the home team going into halftime with a 42-41 lead. But the VGCC squad caught fire in the last 15 minutes of play, sealing a 20-point victory.

The Vanguards were led in scoring by Henderson resident E.J. Henderson, who scored 26 points. Other players in double digits included Jayson Brown of Raleigh (22), Shantel Harrington of Henderson (16) and Michael Wright of Oxford (14). VGCC head coach Avery Wilson called the game the “coming-out party” for Harrington, who joined the team in the spring semester and provided the team with a lift when he came off the bench in the second half.

Next, VGCC will play the junior varsity squad from Louisburg College Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at Western Vance High School in Henderson. The game will be a rematch from the Vanguards’ first regular-season game, which VGCC won 77-64 at Louisburg. Johnston Community College will visit VGCC for the Vanguards’ final home game of the season, on Feb. 28. There is no charge for admission to VGCC home games.
