VGCC Board Approves Intercollegiate Athletics for College

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held its bimonthly meeting on Monday, May 19 at the college’s Henderson campus. During that meeting, the Board approved intercollegiate athletics for the 2008-2009 season, voted to increase Day Care fees, approved the 2008-2009 meeting calendar and heard about the success of the Teacher Associate Program at the college.

Dr. Robert C. Keys, President of Rockingham Community College in Wentworth, N.C., was a guest at the meeting and made a presentation to the Board on intercollegiate athletics. Following the presentation and discussion by Board members, the Board voted to start intercollegiate athletics and to join the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

The Board also voted to increase the Day Care fees. The new rates will be $525 per month for one-year-old children. All other children (ages two through five years old) will be $495 per month. The new rates will be effective July 1.

Dr. Angela Ballentine, Vice President of Instruction, reported to the Board that Vance County Schools had recognized the 2007-2008 Teacher Associate Program at Vance-Granville as a “Champion of Education” and presented the group with a plaque to commemorate that honor.

The Board also approved the 2008-2009 meeting calendar. The regular meetings of the Board are held bi-monthly, on the third Monday, at 7 p.m. in the Board Room in Building 1 on Main Campus, unless otherwise noted. Committee meetings are held on the same day, beginning at 5 p.m. The 2008-2009 meetings will be held as follows: July 21, 2008; September 15, 2008; November 17, 2008; January 26, 2009; March 16, 2009; and May 18, 2009.

The next regular meeting of the Board will be held on Monday, July 21 at 7 p.m. in the board room on Main Campus.
