VGCC awards 339 Scholarships to students

Vance-Granville Community College awarded 339 scholarships to students at an annual awards ceremony, held Feb. 26 in the college’s Civic Center. The number set a new record for scholarships awarded at VGCC in a single academic year.

In her welcoming remarks, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of VGCC, congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the donors who support the college’s Endowment Fund , many of whom were on hand to present their scholarships in person. “This ceremony represents the strong partnerships that have developed over the years between VGCC, local businesses and citizens of our service area,” the president said. “We continue to be grateful for the community support of our Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program, which helps our students continue their education and succeed.” Williams also noted that no community college in the state can boast of having more endowed scholarships than VGCC. The college has awarded more than 7,000 scholarships to students since 1982.

Scholarships of various levels, including 33 Presidential Scholar Awards (the most prestigious endowed scholarships), 76 Presidential Merit Awards, 198 Academic Achievement scholarships and 32 annual (non-endowed) scholarships, were awarded at the ceremony, representing approximately $205,000. VGCC scholarships have been endowed by numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college’s faculty and staff.
