VGCC awards 319 Scholarships to students

Vance-Granville Community College awarded 319 scholarships to students at an annual awards ceremony, held Feb. 25 in the college’s Civic Center.

In her welcoming remarks, Dr. Stelfanie Williams, the president of VGCC, congratulated the scholarship recipients and thanked the donors who support the college’s Endowment Fund, many of whom were on hand to present their scholarships in person.

“The mission of our college is to educate, inspire and support a diverse community of learners, and these scholarships are a wonderful way to support that mission and help all these students achieve their goals,” Williams said. “This ceremony would not be possible without the strong partnerships that have developed over the years between the college, local businesses and citizens of our service area. We continue to be grateful for the community support of our Endowment Fund, which helps our students continue their education and succeed.”

Williams added that, with this year’s ceremony, the number of scholarships awarded by VGCC to date passed the 8,000 mark.

Scholarships of various levels, including 41 Presidential Scholar Awards (the most prestigious endowed scholarships), 68 Presidential Merit Awards, 171 Academic Achievement scholarships and 39 annual (non-endowed) scholarships, were presented at the ceremony, representing approximately $219,000. VGCC scholarships have been endowed by numerous individuals, industries, businesses, civic groups, churches and the college's faculty and staff. In addition to the VGCC students who were recognized, Mary Potter Middle School student Myliek Webb and Granville Magnet School student Nasir Jones, both of Oxford, became the first recipients of a new scholarship to attend VGCC’s Science Camp this summer, thanks to contributions from Hervé and Jackie Sergent.
