VGCC and Securities Division present Investor Education seminar

Vance-Granville Community College’s Small Business Center will host a seminar to remind area residents that investment fraud can and does happen not only in New York or Hollywood, but also in rural North Carolina.

John Maron, director of the Investor Education Program of the Securities Division of the N.C. Department of the Secretary of State, will present Part One of a three-part educational series, “Investor Education in Plain English,” on Tuesday, June 2. The course will be held from 8:30 until 10:30 a.m. in room 7107 of Building 7 on the college’s main campus in Vance County.

The State Securities Division is responsible for enforcing the state’s laws regulating stock brokers, investment advisers and the investment products or services they sell in North Carolina.

Maron will provide valuable tips on safe investing in an objective, non-commercial setting. Attendees will learn about the role of the Securities Division, disclosure requirements for stock brokers and investment advisers, how to spot the “red flags” of an investment scam, questions to ask of themselves and their advisers before making an investment, and how to make sense of stock tables and mutual fund prospectus. “It is my hope,” Maron said, “that the Investor Education in Plain English series will teach people how to avoid ‘too-good-to-be-true’ investment promises. Investors have the right not to be lied to, cheated or stolen from. The first step in avoiding fraud is to become a better informed investor, and we believe this seminar will provide necessary education for every investor.”

Parts Two and Three of the series will be offered later this year. They will focus on making sense of one’s brokerage account statement, understanding the process of resolving disputes with a broker, and what small business owners need to know about raising business capital and preparing for retirement.

VGCC Small Business Center Director Diane Finch advised that space is limited for this free seminar. To reserve a seat for Part One, pre-register by calling the Small Business Center at (252) 492-2061, ext. 3275 or ext. 3240.
