Unique Watercolor Class Scheduled At VGCC

A two-day workshop to introduce students to a technique for creating beautiful and unique works of art through pouring of watercolor paints will be held at Vance-Granville Community College April 20-21.

The seminar will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, in Building 5 on the VGCC main campus in Vance County.

Called Mapo Watercolor Pouring, the technique was developed by Cathy Wiggins, who will instruct the VGCC seminar. Through repeated steps of masking and pouring, the paintings are created without using brushes. According to persons familiar with the technique, “Cathy (Wiggins) uses both watercolor and acrylic paints on watercolor paper, masking out the details and pouring on the colors to achieve rich washes and wonderful color patterns.”

Students will obtain at the seminar the supplies needed to create the pourings, and they will complete two paintings during the workshop.

Cathy Wiggins is a native and lifelong resident of North Carolina who currently lives in Greenville. She has won many awards for her Mapo technique, and she teaches the technique throughout the Piedmont.

The Kerr Lake Art Society is sponsoring the Mapo seminar and is charging $50 to Art Society members and $55 to non-members. The class will be limited to 15. For more information and to register, call Cathy Wiggins at (252) 257-3221 or Lelia Brigham at (252) 492-5281.
