Two Granville Central grads sign on for VGCC Women’s Volleyball

A pair of Granville Central Panthers will become Vance-Granville Community College Vanguards this fall. Pictured above from left, Hilary Aitken and Hillary Russell, both of Oxford, recently signed their letters of intent to join the 2010 VGCC women’s volleyball squad. Aitken (5’9″) was a hitter and Russell (5’6″) a passer for the varsity volleyball team at Granville Central High School. They and their new teammates are scheduled to take the court for the first time on Aug. 27 at Sandhills Community College. The team’s first match at home is set for Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Complex in Henderson. This is the second season for the VGCC women’s volleyball program. The Vanguards are under the direction of first-year head coach Shervi Barnes and assistant coach Krista Carlson. Barnes played volleyball and served as head coach at Virginia State University, while Carlson played for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, has served as an assistant coach for youth volleyball, and is also an instructor for VGCC’s Criminal Justice program.
