Thompson Joins VGCC Board of Trustees

The Vance-Granville Community College Board of Trustees held their bimonthly meeting on September 18 at the Henderson campus of VGCC. During the meeting, Ninth District Court Judge Daniel F. Finch swore in Ernest Thompson of Granville County for a four-year term. Also during the meeting, the Board received updates on building projects, and psychology instructor Peter Metzner spoke on his recent visit to China. The Board approved the 2006-2007 current operating budget, the 2006-2007 meeting calendar, the 2006-2011 VGCC Strategic Plan, the selection of architects for the facilities master plan, and the MRI/CT Program agreement with Edgecombe Community College.

Appointment of New Member

Ninth District Court Judge Daniel F. Finch swore in Ernest Thompson of Granville County for a four-year term on the VGCC Board of Trustees. Thompson who resides in Butner, NC is a retired educator and was appointed by the Granville County Board of Education. His term will end in 2010. He is replacing Clarence Lemons of Oxford who was appointed by the Granville County Board of Education in 1994 and served on the Board for 12 consecutive years.

Meeting Calendar Approved

The Board approved the 2006-2007 meeting calendar. The approved meeting dates are: November 20, 2006; January 22, 2007; March 19, 2007; and May 21, 2007. Regular Board meetings are held bi-monthly, on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. on the Henderson campus. Committee meetings are held on the same day usually beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Metzner Visits China

Psychology instructor Peter Metzner gave a special presentation to the Board of his recent visit to China as Vance-Granville Community College’s World View delegate. World View is an international program for educators sponsored by the University of North Carolina.

Building and Expansion Projects

John Foster, Building Committee Chair, reported that the South Campus expansion is 85% complete. The project completion will run past its original October 31 schedule, but will not impact operations as classes are not scheduled in the new areas until January.Foster reported that the bioprocess lab on main campus is 85% complete as well. Lab cabinets and stations have been installed.

Also at this September meeting, the Board voted to select MJBA Architects to move ahead with the facilities master plan. This group will devise a plan for growth and expansion for the college to carry it forward into the next decade.

Other Business

In other business, the Board approved the current 2006-2007 operating budget at $32,449,158. The 2006-2011 VGCC Strategic Plan was also approved as presented, and the Board approved the MRI/CT Program agreement with Edgecombe Community College.
