Students win VGCC Library contest

Several Vance-Granville Community College students enjoyed a delicious lunch at The Vanguard Café recently after winning a contest held in honor of National Library Week 2015.

The contest called for VGCC students to suggest a meal (appetizer, entrée and dessert) using library culinary resources (online databases, cookbooks, etc.) as their inspiration. The three selected winners, along with one guest each, were then invited to enjoy a lunch prepared by VGCC Culinary Arts students at the Masonic Home for Children in Oxford on April 16, during National Library Week. The menu that day included an Asian salad, roasted salmon with teriyaki glaze over fried rice, and fried chocolate won tons with meringue.

The winners were Theresa Chiplis of Norlina, a student in the Global Logistics Technology program, whose guest was her husband, Steven Chiplis (also a student in the college’s CTI Web Design & Support program); Dianna DeWeese of Creedmoor, a student in the Business Administration and Accounting programs, who was accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Crystal DeWeese of Creedmoor; and Daniel Woody of Stovall, a College Transfer student, who invited Tashayia Busby of Henderson, a fellow College Transfer student.

Each winner also received a gift box from the Library, filled with gourmet chocolates, cookies and sparkling grape juice.
