Russian scholar to speak at VGCC on April 13

Vance-Granville Community College will host a noted scholar to talk about Russia and its place in an interconnected world on Wednesday, April 13 from 11 a.m. until noon in the Civic Center on the college’s main campus in Vance County. The public is invited to attend the presentation, which is offered free of charge.

 

The guest speaker, Dr. Lada Kochtcheeva (pictured above), is an Assistant Professor of Political Science in the School of Public and International Affairs at North Carolina State University. She will discuss Russia’s engagement with globalization, a topic on which she recently published an article in the journal, New Global Studies. Kochtcheeva is currently at work on a book covering Russia’s political, economic, and cultural response to global forces.

 

Dr. Kochtcheeva was born in Moscow, Russia. She received her B.S. in Ecology and Nature Management from the Russian University of Peoples’ Friendship in Moscow. She graduated with a Master of Environmental Studies from the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Oregon. Before joining the NCSU faculty, she was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Michigan, Dearborn. Her current research interests focus on environmental regulatory policy issues, post-Soviet politics, and globalization from comparative historical and institutionalist perspectives. Kochtcheeva is the author of “Comparative Environmental Regulation in the United States and Russia: Institutions, Flexible Instruments, and Governance.” She conducted research and published a report on the impact of the transformed environment on human health while at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). She is also interested in post-communist development, regional economy and security issues in Eurasia, and the influence of globalization on different countries in the world. She is a member of the American Political Science Association and the International Studies Association.

 

Kochtcheeva’s presentation is the fifth installment of an International Speakers Series sponsored by the VGCC Global Awareness Committee in partnership with the University of North Carolina’s World View program. The series is designed to enhance public awareness of pressing international issues and how they affect area residents.
