Record 101 Inducted into Honors Society At Vance-Granville Community College

Vance-Granville Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 101 students into the international honorary society of two year colleges on April 18. This was the largest group ever inducted since the Alpha Sigma Chi chapter began at Vance-Granville.

All full-time students inducted into Phi Theta Kappa have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in associate degree curriculum programs, and part-time students have a minimum 3.75 GPA. They all must have completed 12 credit hours toward their degrees.

Vance-Granville President Randy Parker, himself a member of Phi Theta Kappa, was the principal speaker at the ceremonies. He congratulated the inductees on their scholastic success and said the college measures its success by the success of its students and, “You are Vance-Granville’s best,” he said.

Parker offered a three-part formula for continued success. Parker told the students to sharpen their focus, to build their confidence and to ignite their passion.

He took a majority of his remarks from a book entitled, “107 Ways to Stick To It,” a copy of which he gave each Phi Theta Kappa inductee. Parker advised the students to “follow your heart and leave a legacy. Mountains will get in your way as you strive for success. Stick to it and you can move them,” he said.

Phillip Mondou, biology instructor, and Evelyn Hall, coordinator of the Academic Skills Center, are the faculty advisors for the Alpha Sigma Chi Chapter. Mondou told the new inductees and their families and friends in attendance that Phi Theta Kappa began in 1918 with chapters in eight women’s junior colleges in Missouri.

Hall said that while scholarship is the first aim of PTK, it also encourages leadership development and public service. VGCC’s chapter received the PTK Pinnacle Scholarship Award for 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005 for increased enrollment in the society.
