More players sign with VGCC Women’s Volleyball

Former local high school athletes are among those who recently signed national letters of intent to join the women’s volleyball team at Vance-Granville Community College.

Julia Sumner of Henderson is set to join the Vanguards this year after compiling an outstanding record on the Southern Vance High School volleyball squad. As a Raider, Sumner was MVP one season, WIZS Radio Athlete of the Week on one occasion, and was named to the All-Conference team and to the Daily Dispatch All-Area team. She was also named All-Tournament during her participation in Junior Olympics volleyball. Sumner (5’3″) played setter for the SVHS team and graduated in 2010. She is now a student in the College Transfer program at VGCC.

Kaylin Owen of Henderson, a senior at Northern Vance High School who will graduate in May, also recently agreed to join the VGCC team. Owen (5’3″) played outside hitter both for the Vikings and for Junior Olympics (alongside Sumner). Owen was named MVP in Junior Olympics three years. She plans to enroll in the College Transfer program with the intention of pursing a four-year elementary education degree.

Bethaney Cosmai of Louisburg is the third new recruit for the Vanguards. She played back center for the Douglas Byrd High School (Fayetteville) Eagles before moving to the area. Cosmai (5’) has more recently played in the Franklin County Parks and Recreation adult volleyball league. She graduated from Kittrell Job Corps Center, completed CNA and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic training at VGCC, and is now enrolled in the college’s Criminal Justice Technology program.

Sumner, Owen and Cosmai bring to seven the number of VGCC volleyball signees ahead of the 2011 season, which is scheduled to begin in August. For more information on playing volleyball for VGCC, contact Krista Carlson . ….
