Medical Coding update course offered at VGCC Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer training to help medical coders prepare for important changes to the health-care system.

Medical Coding: ICD-10,” a 24-hour course, will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., May 28 through June 13, on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. In this course, instructor Marianne Durling will introduce medical coding and billing professionals to the tenth revision (ICD-10) of the International Classification of Diseases system used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures. On October 1, 2014, the ICD-10 code sets will replace the current ICD-9 code sets.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ICD-10 codes provide more robust and specific data that will help improve patient care and enable the exchange of our health care data with that of the rest of the world that has long been using ICD-10.

“All medical coders will need to attend some ICD-10 training,” Durling explained. “ICD-10 is very different from ICD-9 and relies heavily on anatomy, physiology and terminology for correct code selection. Start now to learn the basics so that when code-set training starts next year, you will be prepared and ahead of the game!”

The cost of this course includes a $65 registration fee and a $4 security/access fee. Registration fees are waived for N.C. resident seniors, ages 65 and above, for one course per semester.
