Kids invited to VGCC Farm Day event April 14

In celebration of Week of the Young Child, all four-year-old children in Vance, Granville, Franklin and Warren counties are invited to “Farm Day,” an annual agricultural education event organized by students in the Early Childhood Associate program at Vance-Granville Community College. The event will be held in the Civic Center on VGCC’s main campus in Henderson on Thursday, April 14, 2011, from 9:45 – 10:30 a.m. for children from Franklin, Granville, and Warren counties, and from 10:45 – 11:30 a.m. for children from Vance County. Each year, Farm Day offers a fun way for children to learn about the sources of the food we eat and the clothes we wear, as well as about plants, animals, and farm equipment. A variety of farm animals will be on site for looking, but not for petting. The event is co-sponsored by local Farm Bureau organizations in Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties.

Teachers who attend Farm Day with their students will receive materials from “Ag in the Classroom,” a statewide service of the North Carolina Farm Bureau. Ag in the Classroom is an educational program designed to provide teachers with quality materials to teach students of various ages, through North Carolina competency-based lessons, about the sources of their food and fiber, and the importance of agriculture to the economy.

For children to attend, their teachers or parents must RSVP by Thursday, April 7, 2011 to VGCC Early Childhood Associate program head Jennifer Johnson at (252) 738-3408.
