Kerr Lake Art Show winners named; on display through April 18

Entries in the 48th Annual Kerr Lake Art Show, co-sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, were judged and put on display for the public in the lobby of the Civic Center on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, April 14-18.

 

This year’s competition saw 21 visual artists from throughout the region submit a total of 61 works in a variety of two-dimensional media, according to Lelia Brigham of Henderson, the Kerr Lake Art Society’s president and a part-time VGCC art instructor who coordinates the event. Cash prizes were awarded for winners in three categories: Professional, Amateur, and Photography. Isaac Talley, VGCC curriculum art instructor and a Master of Fine Arts graduate of East Carolina University, served as the judge for this year’s show.

 

In the Professional category, Evert Furrey of Butner took home the first-place prize with “Sunset in the Smokies,” a watercolor painting. Stephen Filarksy of Franklinton won second place for an oil painting, called “Red Carnation.” M. Theresa Brown of Franklinton came in third for her pastel, “Turn of the Tide.” Honorable mentions in the Professional category were awarded to Jaye Williamson of Oxford, Bunny Matthews of Stovall, Mary Oakley of Creedmoor, Laurie Stephens of Oxford, Don Marlowe of Roxboro and Ann P. Wilson of Henderson.

 

In the Amateur category, Madeleine Parkin of Oxford took home the first-place blue ribbon for her watercolor, “Spring Basket.” An oil painting called “Sanchez the Collie” won second place for Susan Altvater of Louisburg. Dolores Wilkinson of Oxford won third place for her oil painting, “Boy of Summer.” Amateur artists recognized with honorable mentions included Nancy Pittard of Oxford, Cynthia Graham of Henderson, Mikayla Stone of Henderson, and Parkin for another work.

 

Dr. Blanche Haning of Raleigh was the winner in the Photography category for “Brazilian Farmer.” Coming in second was Jeniffer Patterson of Littleton for her photograph, “Beauty.” Wanda Satterwhite of Henderson and Ellen Anderson of Henderson received honorable mentions.
