Kerr Lake Art Show on display at VGCC through June 11

Entries in the 45th Annual Kerr Lake Art Show, co-sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, have been judged and are on display for the public on the second floor of Building 7 on the college’s main campus in Vance County through June 11, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

 

This year’s competition attracted approximately 90 entries from artists working in a variety of two-dimensional media, according to Lelia Brigham, the Kerr Lake Art Society’s president and a part-time VGCC art instructor who coordinates the event. Cash prizes were awarded for the best original works in three divisions: Professional, Amateur, and Photography. In the Professional division, the first-place award was worth $200, the second-place award, $100, and the third-place award, $50. Amateur artists and photographers took home awards of $100 (first), $50 (second), and $25 (third).

 

In the Professional division, Jaye Williamson of Oxford took home the first-place prize with her pencil work, “After the Rain.” Ann P. Wilson of Henderson won second place for her pastel, “Quiet Place.” Laurie Stephens of Oxford came in third for a watercolor, “Mountain Snow.” Honorable mentions in the Professional division were awarded to Lelia Brigham of Henderson, John Brassard of Oxford and to Stephens for another work.

 

In the Amateur division, Susan Altvater of Louisburg took home the first-place blue ribbon for her oil painting, “Barn, Early Morning.” A watercolor called “Dune Snow” won second place for Madeleine Illsche Parkin of Oxford. Dolores Wilkinson of Oxford won third place for an oil painting, “Boy of Fall.” Amateur artists recognized with honorable mentions included Elaine Hamilton of Youngsville, Marlene Rideout of Oxford, Leo Kelly, Jr. of Henderson and Parkin, for another work.

 

Wanda Satterwhite of Warrenton was the winner in the Photography division for “Contemplation.” Coming in second was Olivia Williamson of Oxford, who photographed “Magnolia.” Cynthia Graham of Henderson took the third-place ribbon for “Eye Study.” Honorable mentions in Photography went to Daniel Bender of Norlina and to Satterwhite and Williamson for other works.
