Guest speaker to discuss civil rights, social justice at VGCC

The Male Mentoring Program at Vance-Granville Community College will host a special guest speaker to provide “An Eyewitness Account of Social Justice from the 1960s to Today,” on Thursday, May 7, at 11 a.m. in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus. The public is invited to attend this free presentation.

The speaker, Delores S. Eaton of Durham, is the wife of the late Granville County native, the Rev. Herbert H. Eaton, who was the immediate successor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Mrs. Eaton will discuss her personal experiences regarding Dr. King, the Freedom Riders, Rosa Parks, the fight for social justice and more.

Supported by a grant from the N.C. Community College System, the Male Mentoring initiative at VGCC supports the educational and professional aspirations of male students through an active, intensive, and engaging process of academic coaching and case management. The goals of the program are to keep participating students in school, to increase their graduation rate and to increase their rate of transferring to four-year colleges and universities.
