Graphics, Excel classes scheduled to start in June at VGCC Main Campus

Vance-Granville Community College is currently registering students for courses in graphics and spreadsheet software programs, designed for working professionals or anyone wanting to learn new skills. All are scheduled to start soon on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, and all are taught by Amy O’Geary, an instructor for VGCC’s Office Administration curriculum program.

One course, “Graphics in the Classroom,” is ideal for teachers and teacher assistants who like to use vibrant colors and images as they educate their students. The class will meet on Mondays from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., June 11 through July 23. Participants in the course will become familiar with the Microsoft PowerPoint and Publisher programs to help them create dynamic slide presentations and printed materials. Teachers earn 2.4 continuing education units (CEUs) for completing this course.

Another course, “Graphics for Business Presentations,” will also involve PowerPoint and Publisher but with a focus on office and corporate settings. This course is scheduled for Wednesday nights from 6 until 10 p.m., June 27 through Aug. 8. “PowerPoint presentation software helps you tell a powerful story and share your slides on the web,” O’Geary said. “PowerPoint is one of the simplest computer programs to learn. Anyone can create stunning presentations that look like they were designed by a professional.” She said that Publisher “helps you create, personalize, and share a wide range of professional-quality publications and marketing materials with ease. With Publisher, you can easily communicate your message in a variety of publication types, saving you time and money. Whether you are creating brochures, newsletters, postcards, greeting cards, or e-mail newsletters, you can deliver high-quality results without having graphic design experience.”

An “Intermediate/Advanced Excel” course is scheduled for Thursday nights from 6 until 9 p.m., June 14 through Aug. 9. Designed for students who already have some experience with the Microsoft Excel program, this course will teach advanced spreadsheet formulas and functions. O’Geary said that Excel is used “for storing, organizing and manipulating data” and is employed in budgeting displays, checkbook registers, enrollment records, inventories, coded surveys, field and laboratory research data, and financial and accounting applications.

The cost of each course is a $65 registration fee, plus $6 in other fees. Registration fees are waived for N.C. resident seniors, ages 65 and above, for one course per semester. For more information and to register for any computer courses, call VGCC at (252) 738-3417 or (252) 738-3324.
