Ferguson named to oversee Law Enforcement training at VGCC

A veteran of the criminal justice and education fields recently became the new leader for Vance-Granville Community College’s programs that train both beginning and experienced law enforcement officers. Andrea Ferguson, a resident of Manson, is VGCC’s new coordinator/instructor of law enforcement training, including the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program.

Ferguson (pictured above) previously served as an instructor for the VGCC Criminal Justice Technology program , and was for three years head of that program. She has been a member of the VGCC faculty since 1998. In 2013-2014, Ferguson developed and implemented a Criminal Justice “cohort” program that resulted in 18 law enforcement officers graduating with an associate degree.

Ferguson is a 1997 graduate of the BLET program at VGCC. She is a former Vance County deputy sheriff and former part-time officer with the Littleton Police Department. She currently serves as an auxiliary deputy with the Warren County Sheriff's Office.

Ferguson earned a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections at North Carolina Central University and a master’s in Criminology at Indiana State University. She is a member of the North Carolina Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Criminal Justice Association and the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl.

“Andrea has a wealth of field experience, education and training that makes her ideally suited to lead this program,” said Angela Gardner-Ragland, VGCC’s Dean of Business & Applied Technologies. “She will continue to build upon VGCC’s tradition of success in preparing law enforcement professionals to protect and serve our communities.”

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise. VGCC also provides sworn law enforcement officers, detention officers, and corrections officers with a broad range of mandated and specialty classes , based on both agency needs and new training standards, throughout the year on the college campus and at various agency locations.
