Employability Training May Lead To More Opportunities At VGCC

Two Pathways to Employment program classes will begin at Vance-Granville Community College’s main campus in April that could lead those who complete them into two fields of career training.

A Human Resources Development class in Employability Motivation & Retention will begin on April 8 to help students develop a positive self-concept, employability, communication and problem-solving skills. The class will meet four days until April 11 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Persons completing this training could then enter Nursing Assistant classes the following week, beginning April 15 and running to May 30. Completion of this program will qualify graduates for high-demand jobs in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and doctors’ offices.

Another Employability Skills Class will begin April 15 and run to May 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon Monday-Friday. This will cover preparation for employability in more detail and, in conjunction with this class, students may take the Customer Service class, which runs April 15-May 8 in the afternoon, Monday-Thursday.

The Customer Service Class will teach students basic cash handling and cash register skills and how to deal with angry or hostile customers. Job survival skills will also be covered, aimed at helping students become key employees.

Unemployed and underemployed persons may qualify to attend the Employability Skills classes at no cost, while the Customer Service class costs $60 plus a $22.20 book fee.

For more information on eligibility and to register for either class, call Dorothy Williams, VGCC director of Human Resources Development, at 252-492-2061, ext. 3276.
