When Vance-Granville Community College holds it 25th annual Career Day on April 2, Carolina Sunrock Corp. will be there, represented by a VGCC graduate.

Johnny Balmer, human resource manager, will be on hand for Carolina Sunrock, one of about 70-80 businesses, industries and agencies who will participate in the event. The companies are all potential employers, and they will be at Career Day to tell Vance-Granville graduates and potential graduates about what they do and about the type of workers they hire.

Career Day will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April. 2, in the Civic Center on VGCC’s main campus. Following the open Career Day, several companies will hold interview sessions from 2 to 4:30 p.m. for May 2003 graduates who register for the interviews.

Carolina Sunrock operates several quarries, including the one it has had at its headquarters at Butner about 20 years and one that is on the verge of opening on 100 acres south of Kittrell, near the Tar River. Bryan Pfohl, chairman of Sunrock Group, said his company began taking stone from the Kittrell quarry and crushing it in May, and they are in the process of building asphalt and concrete plants at the site. The company recently acquired another site near Raleigh-Durham International Airport.

Johnny Balmer, who lives in Oxford, graduated from Vance-Granville Community College with an associate’s degree in Industrial Management in 1989. He worked many years for a Henderson industry before joining Carolina Sunrock as its human resource manager.

Carolina Sunrock is a growing company, and Balmer said he may be seeking applicants for several positions when VGCC’s Career Day is held. Last year, he hired two people he interviewed at Career Day. While one of them has left the company, he said Carolina Sunrock is very pleased with Bronzella Taylor of Creedmoor. She earned her Adult High School Diploma at VGCC and is currently enrolled in the college’s Business Administration program while working as an administrative assistant/switchboard operator for Carolina Sunrock.

Bryan Pfohl said that the area’s population will continue to grow, industry will always be here, and companies are looking to community colleges like Vance-Granville to train the people to work in those industries.

Vance-Granville Community College’s Career Center has sent notifications to area employers about the 2003 Career Day. Companies and agencies that plan to attend should notify the Career Center by March 20. Last year, 72 companies and agencies participated.

In addition to potential graduates currently enrolled in Vance-Granville, past graduates are invited to attend Career Day, meet the potential employers and participate in interviews.

Company representatives, VGCC graduates and potential graduates who need more information about Career Day 2003 may call Career Center Director Barbara Smith at 252-738-3326 or her assistant, Deborah Sullivan, at 252-738-3360.
