Annual Autumn Arts Show at VGCC Seeks Entries, Announces Larger Cash Prizes

“Autumn Arts 2006,” the 31st installment of the annual juried art show sponsored by Vance-Granville Community College and the Kerr Lake Art Society, will be held Nov. 6 through Dec. 1. This year, the event will be held on the second floor of Building 7 on VGCC’s Main Campus in Vance County, N.C. <br
The Autumn Arts competition is open to all artists, amateurs and professionals, working in any two-dimensional media, including photography, drawings, prints and collages. Work must be original, have been produced in the past 12 months, and not previously exhibited in a Kerr Lake Art Society show, according to Lelia Brigham, the society’s president and a part-time VGCC art instructor who coordinates the event.<br
Cash prizes will be awarded for the best original works, as chosen by the judge. This year, the prize awarded for the Best Work in Show has been increased to $500, and second-place and third-places prizes, worth $250 and $100 respectively, will also be presented. Honorable mentions may also be awarded at the judge’s discretion. Chancy M. Kapp of Raleigh will judge the competition. Kapp is the Assistant to the President for External Affairs in the North Carolina Community College System. One of her assignments is organizing the annual exhibition of art from the community colleges, for which system President Martin Lancaster selects approximately 150 pieces from across the state.<br
Entries must be hand-delivered to VGCC between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 and Saturday, Nov. 4. Judging is scheduled for Nov. 5. Vance-Granville Community College is located at Exit 209 off I-85 between Henderson and Oxford, N.C. Artists may enter a maximum of three pieces for an entry fee of $20 for Kerr Lake Art Society members, or $25 for non-members.<br
Works may not exceed 36 inches per side, image size. All entries must be framed, and sawtooth hangers are not allowed. Non-traditional works may be entered without a frame, but they must not exceed 36 inches and must be equipped for hanging.<br
All work entered must be for sale. Autumn Arts has commercial and private patrons, including Vance-Granville, Ms. Nina Cheatham and Mr. Douglas Wortham, who will select pieces they wish to buy prior to the opening of the show. Sales to the public at the value specified on the artist’s entry card will also be encouraged throughout the show. <br
Works entered in the show will remain on display through Dec. 1, when the exhibit ends. Autumn Arts will be open for public viewing from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.<br
Anyone interested in the show may call Lelia Brigham at (252) 492-5281 for more information.<br
