360 Elude Raindrops to Receive Degrees, Diplomas At VGCC
Scattered light showers did not deter Vance-Granville Community College from holding Spring Graduation exercises outside by the campus lake Saturday, May 11.
The school awarded 360 degrees, diplomas and certificates to graduates, 187 to curriculum program graduates and 173 to those completing adult high school diploma and general education development programs.
Frank H. Madigan, retired dean of Student Services and a 29-year employee of Vance-Granville, delivered the commencement address. He said that since far-sighted community leaders established the college more than 30 years ago, VGCC has provided educational opportunities to thousands of local citizens.
Madigan said he and many others in the four counties served by Vance-Granville Community College depend on its graduates for protective services, craftsmen in the industrial workplace, automobile service, home repair and health services from nursing to X-rays to home health assistance.
The speaker listed what he thinks has made VGCC the hub of educational opportunities in this area: a strong board of trustees that volunteer their time and energy to insure that local citizens have the opportunity to improve themselves; outstanding leadership in administrators and deans who grew up in rural North Carolina and understand students needs; and faculty, staff and administrators who live in the local community and have daily contact with area populations.
Madigan then urged the graduates to use Vance-Granville as a beginning and to continue learning throughout life. “Formal education has equipped you with the tools to continue your growth,” he said. “Let books be your friend; the mind has limitless boundaries and can be expanded to great potential.
“Members of the Class of ’02 will be our leaders of the future, and I know they have tools and skills to set us on the right path,” he said.
This commencement marked the first graduation of students with Associate in Applied Science degrees in the Network Administration and Support concentration of the Information Systems program. Graduates of this program are trained to install and support computer networks. There were five graduates in this first class.

Gladys Green of Oxford congratulates her son, Don D. Green, who received his Associate in Applied Science in Information Systems Technology during Spring Graduation May 11 at Vance-Granville Community College. Mrs. Green is a student in the Early Childhood Associate/Teacher Associate program and is on track to graduate in August. Recently, both mother and son were inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.
David Adcock of Henderson and his family find a shelter from the rainfall to enjoy a snack following graduation May 11. Adcock, a detective with the Vance County Sheriff’s Department, earned an Associate in Applied Science degree in Criminal Justice Technology.
