22nd Annual VGCC Golf Tournament Raises $28,000 for Student Scholarships

One hundred eighty-four golfers filled the Henderson Country Club course May 16 for competitive fun, food and to raise money for the Vance-Granville Community College Endowment Fund.

The 22nd annual edition of the tournament netted about $28,000 to help provide scholarship assistance to deserving students at the college.

In the morning competition, the Carolina Sunrock team of Eric Linney, Alan Hedgepeth, Greg Johnson and Eddie Gupton took first place with a net score of 58, besting the team of Henderson residents Donald Seifert, Buddy Finch, John Norwood and Buddy Thomas by one stroke.

Jimmy Broadway won the prize for the longest drive on hole number 1 in the morning, and Doug Byrom put his tee shot just inches from the hole on number 9 to take the closest-to-the-pin prize.

The Harris Inc. team of Dale Pernell, Daniel Faulkner, Billy T. Stanton and David Fairey scorched the course with a gross score of 53, net 56, to win the afternoon round. Second place was taken by the NT Techno team from Oxford, composed of Sam Higdon, Yasomi Kato, Ken Kuroki and Tim Pike. Third went to the Union Bank & Trust team of Scott Burnette, Cliff Rogers, Gray Yancey and Mike Satterwhite.

Adam Fletcher had the long drive in the afternoon, and Ruxton Bobbitt won the closest-to-the-pin prize on hole number 9.

Golfers enjoyed breakfast donated by Bojangles, Daylight Donuts and Supply Line Country Market, lunch funded by Glaxo-Smith-Kline, and dinner compliments of Lowe’s Foods of Henderson. Harris Inc. and Coca-Cola provided refreshments for the players on the course.

VGCC President Randy Parker said he was extremely pleased with the results of the tournament and said the real winners are the students who will be able to pursue their educational goals with scholarships the net proceeds will help provide.

“In addition to the entry fees paid by the golfers, a great deal of the money raised came from our sponsors who we really want to thank for their support,” Parker said.

Best Care LLC of Oxford, Boyd Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC of Henderson, Cardinal Health 303 Inc. of Creedmoor, Carolina Sunrock LLC of Butner, DKWA Architects of Rocky Mount, Granville Medical Center of Oxford, Progress Energy, Southern Lithoplate, Vulcan Materials Co. of Henderson and Wake Electric supported the tournament at Platinum Sponsors.

Gold Sponsors were The Athlete’s Foot of Henderson, Barnett Properties of Henderson, Brooks Appraisal of Oxford, CEI of Raleigh, Century 21 Country Knolls Realty of Henderson, Glaxo-Smith-Kline of RTP, Lowe’s Foods of Henderson, Harris Inc. of Henderson, RBC Centura of Henderson, The Daily Dispatch of Henderson and Union Bank & Trust Co. of Oxford.

In addition, gift donations sponsored holes in memory of Kay Lemons and in honor of Clarence Lemons, Pat Graham and John K. Nelms.
