VGCC welcomes new Women’s Volleyball coach

Jessica Smith of Roxboro has been named the head coach for the women’s volleyball team at Vance-Granville Community College.

Smith has played volleyball for 20 years and earned All-Conference honors while playing for Manteo High School. She then continued her playing career at Pitt Community College, which, like VGCC, competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association, but in a different division.

After one season at PCC, Smith joined the United States Navy and continued to play beach volleyball regularly while in service. “Throughout my travels, I have played and coached in many different areas and truly have a passion for coaching volleyball,” Smith said. “I started out coaching in 2004 for a traveling league in Kill Devil Hills, N.C., where we competed in large tournaments in the Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Williamsburg areas. I have coached a team for a competitive women’s league and for a 14-16-year-old league in Person County for the past three years. In addition, I coached for Southern Middle School in Roxboro for the 2016 volleyball season.”

Smith holds an associate in applied science degree in Landscape Gardening from Sandhills Community College and is currently a student at North Carolina A&T State University, completing a bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Secondary Education. She is also a North Carolina Certified Plant Professional.

“We are excited to welcome Coach Smith as the new leader for our Vanguards volleyball team,” said Jermiel Hargrove, VGCC’s coordinator of student activities and athletics. “She brings to our program a great combination of experience as a coach and as a student-athlete at the junior college level.”
