Granville County Habitat for Humanity purchases house built by VGCC students

The partnership between Vance-Granville Community College and Granville County Habitat for Humanity is continuing in a new way, after the non-profit organization recently purchased a nearly-finished house built by Carpentry students at the college.

Cheryl Hart, president of the local Habitat affiliate, said that her organization was pleased to be able to purchase the house, in order to “jump-start” their efforts. “Earlier this year, our board of directors made a decision to accelerate the pace of building,” she explained. Buying a house that VGCC students have already built on the college campus will allow Habitat to provide another affordable home in a short period of time since their last home was dedicated in January 2016. That was the first Habitat house built primarily by VGCC Carpentry students. They were supervised by program head Keith Tunstall, who is also a Granville County Habitat for Humanity board member.

The new house will be moved from VGCC’s main campus to a lot in Oxford that is already owned by Granville County Habitat for Humanity, on Kingsbury Street, near the intersection with King Street. With 1,344 square feet of heated space, the home boasts three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a large walk-in closet, two full bathrooms, and a large kitchen with birch cabinets. Its siding is Hardi-Plank, with vinyl trim in white.

“We were amazed by how well-built the house was,” said Hart. “We couldn’t have asked for a better house.” She said that her organization hopes to have the home completed and ready for a family by January of 2017.

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian ministry founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live. The Granville County organization is one of more than 1,400 local affiliates in the United States. Habitat has helped to build or repair more than 800,000 houses and served more than four million people worldwide.
