VGCC Women’s Volleyball team 1-1 to start season

In their first match of 2015, the Vance-Granville Community College women’s volleyball team came home with a victory.

The Vanguards traveled to Laurinburg to take on the junior varsity squad at St. Andrews University in a doubleheader on Saturday, Aug. 22.

In the first match, which was played best-of-three, VGCC won both sets, with scores of 25-21 and 25-20. Leading the Vanguards were sophomore Kara Reese of Henderson and newcomer Jesse Edwards of Henderson, both of whom had six kills and seven blocks. Reese also contributed five digs. Another returning player from last season, Rachel Thomas of Louisburg, led the team in digs, with eight, and in aces, with three. Freshman Melissa Elliott of Townsville had the most assists (eight) for the Vanguards. Sophomore Caitlyn Robins of Creedmoor was right behind Elliott, with seven assists, and contributed five digs and four blocks as well.

The second match began with a close victory for VGCC over St. Andrews in the first set, 25-24, but the Lady Knights came back to win the two remaining sets, 25-13 and 15-10. Reese was again the leader in kills (nine). Elliott had the most assists (ten). Thomas notched nine digs, to lead in that category again.

The Vanguards take a 1-1 record into their first home match, set for Friday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m. at Aycock Recreation Center in Henderson. Piedmont International University is the first opponent for VGCC at home.
