VGCC course to help Health Care Organizations transition to new Coding System

Vance-Granville Community College will soon offer training to help medical coders and other professionals to prepare for important changes to the health care system.

ICD-10,” a 96-hour course, will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 until 9 p.m., July 7 through Oct. 27, on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County. The instructor will be Patsy McGill.

ICD-10 is the abbreviation for the tenth revision of the International Classification of Diseases system used to report medical diagnoses and inpatient procedures. On October 1, 2015, the ICD-10 code sets are scheduled to be in use throughout the United States, replacing the current ICD-9 code sets.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, ICD-10 codes provide more robust and specific data that will help improve patient care and enable the exchange of health care data with that of the rest of the world, which has long been using ICD-10.

This new VGCC course covers updated ICD-10-CM (Clinical Modification) and ICD-10-PCS (Procedure Coding System) coding guidelines with practical applications. Students will put what they learn into real-world practice through case studies.

The cost of this course is $184 plus the cost of the textbook.

The deadline to register for the course is July 1.

Prospective students can now register and pay for this course online ( vgcc.springerstudios.net/oex ).  They also have the option to register and pay for classes at Main Campus in Building 7, Room 7120, Tuesday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
