VGCC celebrates Library Month with student contests

Vance-Granville Community College Library Services joined libraries across the country in recognizing National Library Month in April. To celebrate, the college library held contests for students which offered opportunities for creativity and promoted increased awareness of available information services and resources.

In May, Leah Williams of Macon, a student in the College Transfer program at VGCC, was named the winner of the “Wow-Us-With-Your-Words Magnetic Poetry Contest.” (See her winning poem below)  In this competition, students used a set of magnets bearing various words and rearranged the magnets to form their original poems on display boards at the libraries on the college’s Main Campus, South Campus and Franklin County Campus. The poet then took a photo of his or her composition and emailed it to library officials, who featured selected poems on the library’s Instagram , Facebook and Twitter pages.

Timithy Smith of Norlina, also a College Transfer student, won the virtual “Scavenger Hunt” Contest, in which students had to correctly answer 15 questions focusing on the library’s online services. Questions could be answered by researching on the library website ( lrc.vgcc.edu ). VGCC Library Services offers a wide range of electronic educational resources, such as e-books, electronic databases and DVDs, in addition to the more traditional books, magazines, academic journals and newspapers.

Each student won a $40 gift certificate to the VGCC Bookstore .

The main library is located in Building 2 on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, but library services are also available at the other campuses and online. Libraries are also open to the public, supporting life-long learning and intellectual enrichment for the community. For more information, visit lrc.vgcc.edu or visit any of the library locations to sign up for a library account.
