New Home Care Aide course offered at VGCC Warren Campus

Vance-Granville Community College will offer a Home Care Aide training course at the college’s Warren County Campus in Warrenton, May 27 through June 24.  Classes are set to be held Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

This marks the first time that the course has been offered by VGCC. Home Care Aide is a relatively new specialty designation created as part of a revision to the state’s Nurse Aide training programs.

To register for the Home Care Aide course, a student must be currently listed on the N.C. Nurse Aide Registry (Level 1) and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. The course offers advanced training for a Nurse Aide (CNA) focused on enhancing specific skills needed when providing care in a home setting, rather than in a nursing facility. Topics include person-centered care, nutrition/hydration, patient and personal safety, mental health, dementia, behavioral challenges, pain management, palliative care and stress management.

According to the N.C. Division of Employment Security, Personal/Home Care Aide is the fastest-growing occupation in North Carolina, with 75.8% more job openings projected in 2016 than there were in 2006.

The cost of the Home Care Aide course is $184. Prospective students can now register and pay for this course online ( vgcc.springerstudios.net/ohp ).

VGCC’s other Occupational Healthcare Programs include two levels of Nurse Aide training as well as Refresher courses, Geriatric Aide, Medication Aide and Phlebotomy (see schedules at http://vgcc.springerstudios.net/schedules/occupational-healthcare.cfm ).

The college is also continually introducing new training courses related to health-care administration (find these at http://vgcc.springerstudios.net/schedules/occupational-ext.cfm ), including Health Unit Secretary and Electronic Health Records in June, as well as the Medical Coding ICD-10 course in July.
