Three VGCC campuses will celebrate Earth Day April 22

Vance-Granville Community College will hold Earth Day festivals on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the college’s Main Campus in Vance County, South Campus in Granville County, and the Franklin County Campus. The public is invited to attend events at any location, which are free of charge and are designed to educate the college and community about conservation and the natural world in a fun, informative setting.

 

At Main Campus , activities will take place outside around the Gazebo and courtyard areas, and will move into the VGCC Civic Center in the event of rain. VGCC students, staff and faculty will present art, projects, information and demonstrations related to subjects such as environmental science, gardening, alternative energy, sustainable agriculture, organic food, green construction, recycling and wildlife. Special guests participating in the event are scheduled to include Backyard Nursery of Oxford, American Wildlife Refuge of Raleigh and the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.

 

Also, the third annual Earth Day 5K Fun Run/Walk will be held on Main Campus to promote both healthier living and a healthier planet. The 5K (approximately 3.1 mile) run/walk is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and allows participants to enjoy VGCC’s picturesque campus ( register here for the Run/Walk ).

 

At VGCC’s South Campus , located between Creedmoor and Butner, guests will include Metech Recycling, a national electronics recycling company with a site in Creedmoor; Creedmoor’s Farmers Market; Granville County Soil and Water Conservation; Granville Greenways; South Granville Water and Sewer Authority; Waste Industries; Bird Houses by Gina; The Scrap Exchange; Harris Worm Farm; Greenology Products; All Safe Records Management Solutions; Dalton Mill Nursery. Special presentations will feature the Tar River Land Conservancy (10 a.m.) environmental engineering firm Hazen & Sawyer (11 a.m.) and the Granville County N.C. Cooperative Extension Office (noon). Attendees are also invited to participate in a trail walk. Meanwhile, as part of a contest, students in several South Campus classes will create posters depicting environmental concerns related to Earth Day.

 

At Franklin Campus , located on N.C. 56 near Louisburg, guests are set to include the North Carolina Forest Service, Metech Recycling, the Franklin County office of N.C. Cooperative Extension, Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation, New Life Total Fitness, NC Green Power, Franklin County Early College High School, Novozymes, and Safe Space. Franklin Campus students will also participate in an art/poster contest, and attendees will help clean up the local environment with a “Trash Walk.”
