VGCC to offer Simulation and Game Development courses

When Vance-Granville Community College’s fall semester begins Aug. 19, area residents will have new opportunities to train for a growing number of jobs in the world of designing video games and 3-D simulations.

VGCC is now offering the Simulation and Game Development degree program through a partnership with Wake Technical Community College. VGCC will offer the program’s first-year courses, as well as many required general education credits. Students will then complete the 71-credit-hour Associate in Applied Science degree at Wake Tech.

“These courses are not offered online, so this partnership will provide students in this region the opportunity to work towards the degree without the cost and time of traveling to Wake County for the first year,” said Spring Tucker, chair of VGCC’s Business Technologies department. “We are excited about these offerings, because computer simulation and gaming are being used in a variety of fields, not only for entertainment but also for training in the military, educational institutions, medicine and more.” She noted that jobs for graduates are available nearby. “The Research Triangle area is among the top regions for the simulation and gaming industry and contains the third-largest concentration of video-game companies in the United States,” Tucker said. “There are more than 30 simulation and game companies in the Triangle area.”

Four Simulation and Game Development (SGD) courses are scheduled at the college’s Main Campus in Vance County this fall: Introduction to SGD, SGD Design, Graphic Design Tools, and Art for Games. The skills learned in SGD can be applied to modeling, design, programming, audio/video technology, creative arts and creative writing as well as visual arts. Students will receive hands-on training to learn graphics as well as animation using 3D modeling and programming. Other skills covered will be documentation, production, testing, and marketing which are all vital skills needed to be successful in the industry. Graduates should be well on their way to working in industry and using industry standard software as taught in the classroom.
