VGCC Child Care Center Students Graduate

Eleven graduates of the Vance-Granville Community College Child Care Center on the college’s Main Campus were honored in a special ceremony on May 30 as they prepared to enter kindergarten this fall.

The Class of 2014 included Mia Elise Monroe of Durham; Carson Grace Rowan, Kylie Paige Stainback and Mya Marquise Thompson, all of Henderson; Michelle Anne Hunter and Kaylee Grace Overby, both of Kittrell; Nakiyah Elysha Dunston, Mark Willard Medlin and Benjamin Boyd Waters, all of Oxford; Owen Christopher Beal of Wake Forest; and Annabel Jennifer Willey of Warrenton. Aiden James Duke of Oxford served as the marshal.

Denise Gill, the child day care center manager, said that each year, teachers ask the graduates what they want to be when they grow up, and she shared their goals and aspirations with the audience of family members and friends. Among the members of the class were a future “fashionista,” as well as hairdressers, clothing designers, princesses, ballerinas, doctors, dentists, police officers, firefighters and a paleontologist.

Gill thanked all the families who had allowed the center’s staff to nurture and educate their children. “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to be a part of your child’s growth,” Gill said.

During the program, the children recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang three songs — “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee,” “Sunshine Medley” and “Good-bye.” Medlin and Hunter made remarks on behalf of the class. Poems were recited by Monroe, Rowan, Waters, Overby, Stainback, Beal and Dunston. Thompson provided the invocation, while Willey gave the benediction. Deborah Harris, the lead teacher for the graduating class, helped Gill present diplomas to the students.
