VGCC Golf Tournament raises Record-High Amount for Scholarships
Vance-Granville Community College’s 28th annual Endowment Fund Benefit Golf Tournament generated approximately $33,250 from entry fees and from sponsors to help fund scholarships for deserving students at the college. That result set a new record as the highest-grossing golf tournament in VGCC history. A total of 120 players formed 30 teams to play in either the morning or the afternoon round on May 8, 2012 at Henderson Country Club.
“We greatly appreciate the support of all the golfers and business sponsors who made this our college’s most successful tournament ever,” said VGCC President Dr. Stelfanie Williams. “This record demonstrates the commitment within our four-county communities to ensuring that more students achieve their educational goals. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, VGCC golf tournaments have raised a total of almost $500,000 since the first tournament was held in 1985.”
In the morning round, the team from Professional Striping & Seal Coating — Philip Shope, Grayson Casteen, Scott Bradsher and Charles Phelts — took home the first-place trophy. Second place in the morning round went to the team of Donald C. Seifert, Sr., Buddy Finch, Buddy Thomas and John Norwood, while the team of Mike Rainey, Steve Wright, Onnie Gore and Robert Hubbard placed third.
In the afternoon round, the Institutional Interiors team, including Tim Hill, Mike Baskett, Billy Stanton and Matt Williams, finished in first place. The Rose Oil team of Chip Watkins, George Watkins, Morgan Watkins and Chick Young came in second. Third place in the afternoon went to the Coca-Cola team of Kenny Abbott, David Fairey, Junior Manning and Lee Hight.
Scott Bradsher of the Professional Striping & Seal Coating team took the longest-drive prize in the morning round, while Karter Yutzy of the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company team had the longest drive in the afternoon. Donald C. Seifert, Sr. won the closest to the pin prize on Hole No. 9 in the morning, and Al Blalock of the AXA/Drake team took that honor in the afternoon round. Steven Brame of the Granville Health System team was the winner of the 50/50 Putting Contest. He won $225, which was half of the accumulated $5 entry fees for that contest.
At the dinner held to round out the day, students Ruthie Davis of Warrenton and Jon M. Baumgardner of Oxford, who have each received endowed VGCC scholarships, expressed thanks to those who participated in the tournament. Players also took home an assortment of door prizes and participated in a silent auction.
Numerous companies and individuals supported the VGCC tournament as sponsors. AXA Financial Advisors of Chapel Hill and Glen Raven, Inc. of Norlina were the tournament’s corporate sponsors.

Each year, the golf tournament is the major fundraising event for the VGCC Endowment Fund and Scholarship Program , through which more than 6,500 scholarships have been awarded to students since 1982.
