VGCC students attend statewide WIA Youth Summit

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) Program at Vance-Granville Community College recently sponsored two of its youth participants to attend the sixth annual North Carolina Youth Summit at The Embassy Suites in Greensboro. The NC Youth Summit is a two-day statewide conference for youth enrolled in WIA programs. The Summit was developed so that young adults could come together to evaluate and address critical statewide youth issues, identify commonalities, share best practices, and develop value-added solutions. Attending the Summit from VGCC were Samantha Hargrove of Warrenton, a student in the Medical Office Administration program, and Christara Floyd of Henderson, a College Transfer student, along with a member of the VGCC staff, WIA Specialist Courtney Cooke. The VGCC WIA participants joined approximately 200 youth (ages 16 to 21) from various Workforce Development Local Areas. This year’s Youth Summit featured the “Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour: Turning Your Dreams Into Reality,” which focused on what it means to be an entrepreneur and the steps to take in order to start a business venture. The youth had the opportunity to hear various speakers and participate in panel discussions and group activities.

The WIA program at VGCC, sponsored by the Kerr-Tar Workforce Development Board, provides training and employment opportunities for youth and adults. For more information, contact Sylvia Jones , the Director of the VGCC WIA program, at (252) 738-3297.
