VGCC Business Student receives Fluor scholarship

Adam D. Blanton, a Vance-Granville Community College Business Administration student and a student at Kittrell Job Corps Center, is one of a select few from across the country who recently received a $5,000 renewable scholarship from the Fluor Foundation.

Blanton (pictured above in the VGCC open computer lab), 23, is originally from Fayetteville, N.C. He enrolled at the Kittrell Job Corps Center on January 12, 2010. He completed his trade in Health Occupations in April 2010 and started college in May 2010 at Vance-Granville. Blanton has been on the Dean’s list the past two semesters and was inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa honor society in 2011. He is set to graduate from VGCC in May 2012 and plans to immediately enroll at Fayetteville State University to pursue his bachelor’s degree in healthcare management. He would eventually like to work in a hospital setting and complete his master’s degree in healthcare management from FSU.

The Fluor Foundation Job Corps Scholarship Program was established in 2003 and awards college scholarships on a yearly basis to students at the several Job Corps locations across the United States that are operated by Del-Jen, Inc., including the one in Kittrell. Job Corps is a no-cost education and vocational training program administered by the U.S. Department of Labor that helps young people ages 16 through 24 secure better jobs, make more money and take control of their lives. The Foundation is associated with Fluor Corporation, the parent company of Del-Jen, a leading provider of outsourced services to the U.S. government. “The Fluor Foundation is pleased to assist the Job Corps and these students in achieving their higher education goals,” said Lee Tashjian, the Foundation’s president. “Supporting this scholarship program is one more way that Fluor invests in student achievement and partners with education.”
