VGCC drama students stage “Zara Spook and Other Lures”

VGCC drama students will stage playwright Joan Ackermann’s comedy, “Zara Spook and Other Lures,” March 31 through April 3. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. on March 31, April 1 and April 2, with matinees at 2 p.m. on April 2 and April 3. All performances are in the small auditorium in Building 2 on the college’s main campus in Henderson.

Zara Spook and Other Lures,” called “wonderfully goofy” by critics, tells the story of Evelyn, a little woman with a big dream: to win the national women’s bass fishing tournament sponsored by Bassin’ Gal Magazine. She has stiff competition in legendary champion Ramona, and may have to settle for “Rookie of the Year.” Meanwhile, she must contend with her indefatigable boyfriend Talmadge, who desperately wants to marry her and refuses to take “get lost” for an answer. Ramona, too, has a man in pursuit, her estranged husband whom she dismissed from her life for being insensitive — a charge he intends to prove wrong. This wacky comedy was a sensation when it first achieved prominence at the Humana Festival of New American Plays in Louisville in 1989-1990.

The cast includes VGCC students Christina Pearce of Henderson as Evelyn, Spencer Nunn of Warrenton as Talmadge, Virtuous Harris of Henderson as Ramona, Rachel Pottern of Wake Forest as Teale, Bryant Bullock of Warren County as Mel and Janelle Scoggins of Creedmoor as Margery. VGCC Theatre Arts/speech instructor Betsy Henderson directs the play.

Admission is $10 for the general public, and $5 for students and VGCC faculty and staff. Tickets may be purchased at the door, but attendees are encouraged to secure their seats by making reservations. For more information and to reserve seats, call Betsy Henderson at (252) 738-3371.
