Traditional Quilting Class Scheduled In September at Warren Campus

Quilting instruction will return to the roots of the craft in a class to be conducted, beginning in September, at the Warren County Campus of Vance-Granville Community College in Warrenton.

Peggy Stocks, who has been teaching quilting at the college many years, will teach a “Traditional and Heirloom Quilting” class that will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Sept. 19-Nov. 21.

“The class will feature hand piecing and hand quilting and will duplicate patterns we have admired from former generations,” Stocks said. “Hand quilting is peaceful and therapeutic, as opposed to the quick, machine quilting practiced by so many today.”

“We are trying to keep quilting alive as given to us by our ancestors,” Stocks said. “It is something we can relax and enjoy without being in a producing mode.”

Stocks added that the traditional quilting should fit right in with the home preservation atmosphere alive and well in Warren County.

Cost of the 30-hour class is $37.50. Stocks said she will give students a list of materials they will need at the first class.
