VGCC Radiography Student Excels In Statewide Competition

Lynsay Allen, a Radiography student at Vance-Granville Community College, put her art degree to work to capture honors in exhibit competition recently at the annual conference of the North Carolina Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Allen’s exhibit, The Art of Radiography, took third place among about 40 entrants from around the state. Her tri-fold exhibit shows how X-rays and other radiographic tools are used in the art world. “They can be used to test the authenticity of a painting or to look underneath the surface coat to see if a more valuable work is being smuggled,” she said.

A native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, Allen has been in the United States five years and currently lives in Franklinton with her husband, Jeremy Dunne. She graduated from VGCC May 13 with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Radiography.

Allen previously earned a bachelor’s degree in art, but she said she could not find satisfying employment in that field and chose to return to school at Vance-Granville. An honors student at VGCC, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year schools that award degrees, and she served the 2002-2003 school year as an Ambassador.

She and her husband plan to move to Miami, Fla., where she plans to work in radiography in a hospital there.

Dr. Lauren Noble, one of Allen’s instructors, said that she is the first VGCC student to ever win an award in the N.C. Society of Radiologic Technologists exhibit competition.
