Beginners Can Learn Painting In Upcoming VGCC Art Class

If you would like to paint, but you think you just cannot do it, here’s hope for you. A veteran artist who specializes in teaching beginners will conduct an oil painting class this fall at Vance-Granville Community College.

Dorothy “Dot” Overby of Kittrell will teach a 30-hour class in the wet-on-wet technique. Many people may be familiar with seeing Bob Ross demonstrate this technique on public television.

The classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30, beginning Sept. 11 and continuing through Dec. 4 in Room 5230 in Building 5 on VGCC’s main campus. Cost of the class is $45, to be paid the first night of classes.

Overby has studied with many of the nation’s top painters and is certified by Grumbacher and Windsor Newton, and she is a member of Teachers and Educators of Art Materials.

“In the wet-on-wet technique, you begin by wetting your canvas, and then as you add your paints, they blend and their colors are softened,” Overby said. “Everyone can paint, and each person has his or her own style. I try to help them bring out that style.”
