Cosmetology Student Is VGCC Vocational Student Of Semester

Like many Vance-Granville Community College students, Judith Anne Wilson works a full-time job during the day while attending school at night.

And like many other VGCC students, her responsibilities as an employer and mother have not interfered with her being an outstanding student. As a result of her academic record and dedication to her studies, Wilson, a Cosmetology student from Henderson, has been chosen as Vance-Granville Community College Vocational Student of the Semester for spring.

Wilson said she always wanted to work with hair and entered the Vance-Granville Cosmetology program several years ago but had to drop out. She enrolled again in the evening program in August 2000 and has been attending two evenings a week since. She has accumulated more than 1,000 of the 1,200 hours necessary to complete the requirements to earn a certificate in the program.

During the day, she is a secretary for Pearce’s Backhoe Service of Henderson, where she lives with her son, Nick, 11.

Judith Ann Wilson wants to open her own hair styling business when she completes her VGCC studies. “I really like Vance-Granville Community College,” Wilson said. “Everyone I’ve met there has been nice to me and has been really helpful,” she added.

Vance-Granville Community College appreciates the non-traditional student like Judith Wilson. “We see so many older men and women who realize they have to get more education to better themselves or to follow their dreams,” said President Robert A. Miller. “We have geared many of our programs to accommodate those who have to work and juggle family life while re-training or training for better jobs.”
