VGCC Mother Of 6, Nursing Graduate Receive Academic Excellence Awards

Ethel Christmas Fogg of Warrenton has six children, ranging from 2 to 22, the oldest a student at Elizabeth City State University. She’s also a full-time student at Vance-Granville Community College.

Brigette Kelly Fitzgerald of Stem received her Associate in Applied Science degree May 11 from Vance-Granville Community College. She plans to continue her education and earn a B.S. in nursing.

Fogg and Fitzgerald were Vance-Granville Community College’s recipients of the Academic Excellence Award May 14 from the North Carolina Community College System. Awards were presented to two representatives of each of the 59 schools in the system during a luncheon in Raleigh.

Ethel Fogg earned her GED high school equivalency diploma from Vance-Granville in 1990 and is currently enrolled in the second year of the two-year Criminal Justice Technology program, maintaining a 3.67 grade-point-average. She is a Dean’s List student and is listed in the 2001-2002 edition of Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges.

While attending Vance-Granville and taking care of her and husband Clinton’s six children, Ethel Fogg also works as a residential advisor at the Kittrell Job Corps Center and is active in Snow Hill Baptist Church in Warren County. Her long-range goal is to become a juvenile court counselor.

Brigette Fitzgerald grew up in New Orleans but lives now in the Stem area of Granville County. She maintained a 3.40 GPA through her nursing studies, the highest in her graduating class. At Vance-Granville, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges, and she was active in the Student Government Association.

Currently employed part-time as a supervisor in interim health care in Durham, she definitely plans to pursue a B.S. in nursing, although she has not decided where she wants to continue her studies.

Each department at Vance-Granville nominated a student for the Academic Excellence Award, and nominees were awarded points for their grade-point-averages, school activities, community/volunteer activities, and for working at jobs while attending school.

VGCC President Robert A. Miller said of the selectees: “We are extremely proud of Brigette Fitzgerald and Ethel Fogg for their accomplishments. They are representative of many Vance-Granville students who juggle school, family and work and still excel in their studies.”
