VGCC Inducts 66 Into Honor Society, Including Oxford Mother And Son

Like many of her fellow community college students, Gladys H. Green had to wait until her children were grown to attend college.

But given the chance, the 56-year-old resident of Oxford is following her dream at Vance-Granville Community College and doing a mighty fine job of it. On April 23, she was inducted, along with 65 other VGCC students, into the Alpha Sigma Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges.

Among the other inductees was Gladys Green’s son, Don Demetrius Green, who also lives in Oxford.

Gladys Green worked 28 years for Burlington Industries in Oxford and raised her three children. When the textile plant closed and she found herself jobless, she enrolled at Vance-Granville where she is studying in the Early Childhood Associate/Teacher Associate program and is on track to graduate in August. She hopes to get employment in the Granville County schools.

“It was a little scary returning to school after all these years, but it was nice to have the opportunity,” Gladys Green said. “It’s really good how everyone at Vance-Granville welcomes people of my age who come back to school.”

Don Green, her son, will complete his studies in Information Systems Technology and graduate in May. He is currently serving as an Ambassador for the school. Gladys Green has another son, George E. Green Jr. of Mooresville, and a daughter, Leoncie Hart of Oxford.

The Alpha Sigma Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was organized at VGCC in 1991 with 32 charter members. Dr. John Beck, chairman of General College-College Transfer at Vance-Granville, was the guest speaker for this 12th induction ceremony.

Dr. Beck told the inductees they have all excelled, getting mostly A’s in their classes. “You have been successful because you have worked hard,” he said. “That is what excellence requires.”

“It is hard work that allows talent to blossom, and I urge you to continue to work hard to cultivate your talents,” Beck said. He also urged the honorees to continue their educations after VGCC and to continue to excel.
