VGCC Changes Website Address, Eases Access To Wealth Of Information

It has become easier to find Vance-Granville Community College on the Worldwide Web.

VGCC launched its new Website address – vgcc.springerstudios.net – on March 7. This makes it easier to gain access to a tremendous amount of information available on the college’s site.

When the VGCC Website was established several years ago, it was assigned the same long, cumbersome domain name as all community colleges across the nation, said Ken Lewis, VGCC’s director of Information Technology.

“Community colleges have grown weary of this long address, and many of them have changed to ‘.com’ or ‘.org’ addresses,” Lewis said. “The ‘.edu’ domain address was long associated with four-year colleges and universities, and we are pleased to now use it for the Vance-Granville Website.”

VGCC officials said it the new address will not only be easier, but it is also more appropriate. “It is where students would expect to find us on the Web, the same as an N.C. State or a North Carolina Central,” said VGCC President Robert A. Miller. “It is needed because community colleges are now serving vast numbers of students.”

Email addresses for VGCC faculty and staff will also change. Email addresses will now have the same name used before, followed by @vgcc.edu. The old Website and email addresses will continue to work, also, for a limited amount of time.

Vance-Granville Community College’s Website is recognized as one of the best in the community college system, and it has won awards for its design and content.

The site contains “just about everything anyone would want to know about Vance-Granville Community College,” according to Ken Lewis. Persons can find all curriculum and Continuing Education class schedules on the site, as well as registration information, application forms for admission and calendars of key events at the school. There is also a listing of staff and faculty members with their email addresses and telephone extensions, postings of job openings at the college and applications for employment.

Many research and reference links are also posted on the Website’s On-line Library.

“We are truly proud of this informative, attractive Website, and we are pleased that it is now much easier for everyone to access,” President Miller said.
