Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Taps 54 VGCC Students For Membership

Fifty-four Vance-Granville Community College students were inducted into the Alpha Sigma Chi chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Thursday evening, April 15, in a candlelight ceremony in the college’s Civic Center.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society of two-year colleges offering associate degree programs, Philip Mondou, chapter co-advisor, told the inductees and family, faculty and friends gathered for the occasion. The chapter was formed at VGCC in 1991 with 32 charter members. Thursday’s induction brings to 627 the number of VGCC students selected for membership.

Vance-Granville President Robert A. Miller reminded the students they needed a 3.5 grade-point average to qualify for membership and that they represented about 2 percent of the total student body. “This is very select company,” he said.

Alpha Sigma Chi chapter President Mary Wardrick presented the candidates for membership, co-advisor Phyllis Brady read their names, and President Miller presented certificates to these new members:

Maria Bailey, dean of Student Services, was the main speaker for the induction, and she gave the inductees “some insight into the real world.”

She gave the students 10 tips for success, including: do your job as though you owned the company; your attitude can make or break you; never dwell on the past; tell the truth; take time for yourself; be courteous; laugh at yourself; make the most of your time; follow your dreams; and remember that life is not fair.

“Remember that the small things you do are like a pebble in a pond,” Bailey said. “They spread until they make ripples at the far end of the pond.”

The ceremonies ended with the new PTK members lighting “candles of wisdom.”
