Granville Early College students attend VGCC orientation

New students of Granville Early College High School started their college experience July 28 when they attended orientation at Vance-Granville Community College’s South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor. The high school, starting its second school year, is temporarily housed at South Granville High School, while a new facility is built near South Campus. At all four of the early college high schools, which VGCC operates in partnership with local school systems, students simultaneously complete both a high school diploma and a two-year college degree (or up to two years of college-transferable credit) over a five-year period.

At the orientation, freshmen and their parents heard presentations from the heads of two college degree programs that are based at South Campus: Angela Thomas of the Radiography program and Tracy Wallace of the Human Services Technology program. VGCC South Campus Dean Cecilia Wheeler, counselor Phyllis Thomas, and Director of Joint High School Programs Lyndon Hall provided pertinent information about college policies and procedures to the students and parents, and also held a question-and-answer session. Reba Bullock, VGCC’s College Liaison for GECHS, facilitated the discussion and then led students on a campus tour. The principal of GECHS, Chris Ham, and the school’s counselor, Olivia Banks, were also in attendance.

Later during the orientation session, students received welcomes from VGCC President Randy Parker and Vice President of Instruction Dr. Angela Ballentine.
