VGCC Instructors Selected for National workshops

Two Vance-Granville Community College faculty members have been recognized for their expertise by being invited to write practice test questions for college students throughout the United States.

Camella G. Marcom (pictured above, left) of Wake Forest, an instructor for the VGCC Associate Degree Nursing program , recently took part in the Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) Item Writing Workshop on June 21-22 in Kansas City. Items are questions and answers for the various tests ATI has available for students to use as predictors or indicators of how well they will do on their National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). “The conference was wonderful!” Marcom said. “Over 200 nurse educators from colleges and universities all over the country attended. They were from ADN programs like ours at VGCC, as well as BSN programs.” Marcom, who has taught at VGCC since 2005, wrote questions in the area of Nutrition. “One of the most wonderful parts was to meet other educators from all over the country,” she said. “Just the nurses on my team were from Louisiana, Georgia, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, and Nevada.”

VGCC Pharmacy Technology program head/instructor Carla May (also a resident of Wake Forest) will soon be following in Marcom’s footsteps, as she has been invited to an ATI workshop on July 26-27, also in Kansas City. As a member of an Examination Development Committee, she will be writing questions for National Healthcareer Association exams used by people across the country who are seeking certification as Certified Pharmacy Technicians (CPhT). She will also write questions on pharmacology for the national exams for Certified Clinical Medical Assistants (CCMA), Certified Patient Care Technicians (CPCT) and Certified Operating Room/Surgical Technicians (CORST). May (pictured above, right) has worked at VGCC since December 2003, when the college first established its Pharmacy Technology program.
