VGCC adds new Logistics, Electrical certificates

New certificate options will be available to students at Vance-Granville Community College when the new fall semester begins Aug. 17. Curriculum certificates offer short-term training within programs already available at VGCC. They can generally be completed in one or two semesters, and credits earned also count toward diplomas or degrees in that field.

As part of a continuing expansion of the college’s Global Logistics Technology program, the 16-hour Secure Logistics and the 15-hour Logistics Management certificates are being added to VGCC’s current two-year GLT associate degree and other certificates. According to VGCC Director of Logistics Technology Walter E. Martin, the Secure Logistics Certificate will teach students how to identify theft in the distribution environment, reduce shrinkage, practice secure packing and inventory techniques, and how Homeland Security initiatives affect the movement of goods domestically and internationally. Additionally, students will learn about facilities security, track-and-trace concepts, and logistics information systems processes. The Logistics Management Certificate will teach students how companies manage order fulfillment, purchase raw materials, manage warehouses, distribution facilities, and arrange domestic transportation services. They will also learn about freight forwarders, shippers, supply chain collaboration, importing, employee management, lean concepts, third party logistics, and logistics technology.

“This fall, whether you’re thinking of studying logistics for the first time or already in the Logistics career field, but not ready to pursue that degree, these two new certificates can help you jump-start your career,” Martin said. “New opportunities arise daily in the world of Logistics.” Logistics-related careers have recently been listed in the “Top Ten Hottest Careers” in the nation. Within North Carolina, jobs in Distribution, Warehousing, and International Logistics are projected to grow by 14 % between now and 2014. VGCC offers logistics training through the North Carolina Consortium for Logistics Education (NCCLE), a partnership that also includes Wake Technical Community College and the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise at UNC-Chapel Hill. VGCC logistics courses are available online and on-campus.

The VGCC Logistics program is not the only one offering a new certificate option, as the Electrical/Electronics Technology program is also introducing a 15-hour Basic Wiring certificate. “This certificate deals with basic electricity and residential wiring,” said Electrical/Electronics Technology program head Robert Hudson. “Anyone interested in learning about basic wiring practices as required in homes would find this series of classes useful.”
