VGCC trains Boys & Girls Clubs staff

Vance-Granville Community College recently provided training for local staff members of the Boys & Girls Clubs organization. Jacquelin Heath, head of the college’s School-Age Education program, presented a workshop entitled “Classroom Management” on June 14. Although Heath has presented workshops for different groups over the years, this was her first time doing so for the Boys & Girls Clubs. Susan T. Whitten, who leads the local Boys & Girls Clubs as Chief Professional Officer, serves on the advisory committee for the School-Age Education program. When Heath was recently placing one of her students in an internship, or “Co-op,” with the Boys & Girls Clubs, Whitten mentioned that her organization was in need of training. The Boys & Girls Clubs of North Central North Carolina is a non-profit organization serving youth from six to 18 years of age. Its mission is to inspire and enable young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Boys & Girls Clubs give youth access to dedicated, trained staff who can provide guidance in adopting healthy life styles and pursuing educational objectives. The organization is based in Henderson and has after-school program locations in Vance and Franklin counties.

A total of 18 staff members took part in the training, including the local administrative staff: Whitten, Programs Manager April Scott, and Operations Manager Connie S. Ranes. The session was part of the local organization’s summer staff development program. Among the topics were best practices for classroom management and organization; establishing rules, rewards and consequences; and dealing with various types of misbehavior. Heath drew upon her many years of teaching experience. She is currently VGCC’s longest-serving full-time instructor.

VGCC offers an Associate in Applied Science degree and a diploma in School-Age Education , as well as a School-Age Care & Administration certificate. School-Age Education prepares students to work in learning environments for children in Kindergarten through Middle Childhood years. Most graduates are employed as teacher’s assistants in elementary schools. For more information, contact Jacquelin Heath at (252) 738-3298.
