VGCC official graduates from Leadership Program

Angela L. Gardner-Ragland of Henderson, the Director of Applied Technologies and Public Service and program head/instructor for Criminal Justice Technology at Vance-Granville Community College, is one of 23 graduates from across the state in the North Carolina Community College Leadership Program (NCCCLP) Class of 2010. The seven-month leadership program, which includes both face-to-face and computer-based learning experiences, provides preparation and training to develop future leaders within the state community college system.

Gardner-Ragland earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Fayetteville State University and a master’s degree in criminal justice at North Carolina Central University. She started at VGCC as an instructor for the Criminal Justice program in 1997 and became head of the program in 2000. In 2007, while continuing as Criminal Justice program head, she was promoted to supervise all the Applied Technologies and Public Service programs, including Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology, Automotive Systems Technology, Basic Law Enforcement Training, Carpentry, Cosmetology, Electrical/Electronics Technology, Electronics Engineering Technology and Welding Technology. Gardner-Ragland received the VGCC Excellence in Teaching Award in 2004, and is also a graduate of the college’s 2004 Department Chairs Institute and 2005-2006 Leadership Institute.

The North Carolina Community College Leadership Program was created in 1989, under the auspices of the state chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges, to provide an interdisciplinary approach to leadership training through professional development. In today’s climate of change, issues such as re-engineering, budget control, and collaborative approaches to problem solving offer new challenges. N.C. Community College System officials believe that the ability to respond to these challenges is dependent upon the quality and diversity of its leaders.
